When will my counselor contact me? Who should initiate the conversation?
On average, your counselor will message you first within 24 hours.
But they’re eager to get to know you and begin this transformative journey together! So, we encourage you to initiate the conversation and share what’s on your mind.
What to write about in your first message
There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to write your first message.
Here are some ideas to add more structure to it:
- You can begin by introducing yourself, sharing your background. Consider your introductory message as a deep dive into the information you provided in the survey (and your counselor will surely review it first).
- Explain how you’re feeling and what led you to seek help on Calmerry. Describe the challenges you’re experiencing and how long they’ve been affecting you.
- It can also be helpful to mention whether you’re new to online therapy. If you’ve had previous therapy experiences, you can share what worked/didn’t work for you.
- Additionally, share what you hope to achieve through therapy, as this will help your mental health professional guide you effectively to create your therapy goals.
- The more information you provide, the better your counselor can understand your situation and offer tailored support.

What should I expect at my first virtual therapy session?
During the first therapy session, you and your therapist will get to know each other. So they may ask you some questions about your symptoms, medical history, career, relationships, lifestyle, etc. You can ask your therapist about their education, experience, and treatment approaches. The therapist may or may not write something down—it’s a part of the process, and you’re free to ask them any questions.
So when does therapy begin?
The moment you start chatting with a counselor – be it through that first text message, your initial consultation call, or the opening minutes of a face-to-face session – that’s when your therapy journey begins.
How long does the therapy process typically last on Calmerry?
The duration of therapy can vary significantly from person to person. It depends on several factors, such as the specific issues being addressed, the treatment approach, and the individual’s progress and goals.
But here are some general guidelines:
For mild to moderate issues like stress management, relationship problems, or mild anxiety/depression, therapy may last anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
For more complex or long-standing issues like trauma, severe depression, eating disorders, or personality disorders, therapy may be required for 6 months to a year or longer.
The key is that therapy on Calmerry is flexible and tailored to your unique needs. Your therapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan and regularly assess your progress.
The therapy process is open-ended, and you can continue working with your therapist for as long as you find it beneficial.
