Learn to be your authentic self with the help of a therapist

Compulsive lying can be a tough habit to break. It can affect or even destroy relationships, cause a ton of stress, and make it hard to connect with others and oneself. [1] Mbbs, K. K., & Surgeon, R. R. E. H. a. N. (2022, December 14). Pathological Liar vs. Compulsive Liar: Differences, 3 Types & Signs. MedicineNet. https://www.medicinenet.com/pathological_liar_vs_a_compulsive_liar/article.htm The constant guilt and fear of being caught can be super overwhelming.

At Calmerry, we understand how much strength it takes to be honest about your struggles with lying. We’re really grateful to have the opportunity to help our clients work through this challenge and start living a more authentic life.

Some of our amazing clients shared their stories of growth and change. They did it anonymously. While the names are fictitious, their experiences are real and powerful reminders that seeking help is a sign of strength. They show just how strong people can be and how much therapy can help.

This is Ian, who learned to explore triggers of lying and lead an authentic life

“Where do I even start? For the longest time, I was stuck in this crazy loop of just spitting out lies left and right. It was almost like my brain was on autopilot, you know? Before I could even catch myself, I’d be lying to my wife, to my friends, even to myself.

The guilt and anxiety were like a constant stomachache, but I couldn’t seem to stop. Whenever someone called me out, I’d jump straight into defense mode, throwing blame everywhere but on me.

It was a never-ending rollercoaster of emotions, and I was absolutely exhausted.

Then, this one day, my wife pulls me aside, looks me in the eyes, and hits me with, “Ian, I love you, but I can’t keep living like this. The lies are tearing us apart.” And that’s when it hit me – like a slap in the face. I was like, “Man, your lying is ruining the relationships you value most!”

That was the wake-up call I needed, big time.

Working with a therapist to explore triggers of lying

Diana (my therapist) helped me dig deep, find out why I was lying all the time, work on catching myself before the lies slipped out. It was all about owning up to my mess and learning to tackle those super awkward chats about my lies, head-on.

With therapy, I started to bring honesty back into my life, rebuilding trust bit by bit. Trust me, it wasn’t a walk in the park, but every time I chose honesty over a lie, I felt a bit of that heavy weight lift off my chest. I began to see how my lies hurt people, and it was a real eye-opener. It was a humbling experience, but one that taught me the true value of honesty, that’s for sure.

Therapy made me a better man. I learned the value of open communication, taking responsibility, and treating my wife and others with the respect and empathy they deserve.

Therapy benefits

I’m not perfect, but I’m all in on being real and living with integrity. It’s like I’ve been given a second chance at life, and I’m not going to waste it.”
